Why Salem, MA is worth visiting for Halloween

What is the #1 place you think of when you think of Halloween? Ding, ding, ding, SALEM, MA. There’s a reason why people from around the globe swarm to this historical site each year. From the chilling tales of the Salem Witches to Halloween nostalgia, here is why Salem, Massachusetts is worth the visit for Halloween.

1. The history

Whether you are a history buff or not, the tale of the Salem Witches is FASINATING. We did a tour of the Salem Witch Museum and it was the highlight of our trip. It included a theatrical presentation that gave me chills down my spine. They place you in the middle of the room, turn the lights off, and tell the story in a deep, chilling voice, while different scenarios using mannequins and stage props are highlighted on the walls surrounding you. Afterwards, you visit the museum portion to hear the entire story of how witches came to be feared around the world.

Besides, the museum, there are so many interesting buildings to check out like the Salem Witch House or filming locations of the 90’s hit movie, Hocus Pocus.

2. The activities

After you are done with your history lesson, there is still a long list of things to do in Salem, so don’t leave yet! Salem has some really cool shops that are not just Halloween focused. While they have some super touristy shops like a place to get fitted for your own set of vampire fangs, they also have shops that sell wands (and is Harry Potter themed), natural herbs, candles, crystals, plants, tarot card readings, modern day witch necessities, and more.

If you aren’t into shopping, Salem also has a wide variety of tours and my personal favorite, a sunset sailboat ride drinking hot cider.

3. The food

You wouldn’t imagine that a place known for being spooky would have so many dining options, but the food in Salem is seriously AMAZING. They have everything from quick sandwiches to fine dining in a bank from the 1800’s. They have food for every palate with options including but not limited to fresh seafood, Mediterranean, Mexican, classic American, sushi, etc.

I loved every meal I had in Salem and they also have delicious seasonal cocktails. Pictured above is my sangria from dinner.
